A woman who was only 9 when her family waged a court fight to get her onto the boys’ soccer team is now a civil litigator and a successful football player with the New York Sharks.

Jennifer Blum, 34, recently appeared on American Gladiators and plays with the Sharks, part of the Independent Women’s Football League, the New York Times reports.

Like other players on the team, she pays up to $1,000 a season to compete. A wide receiver and defensive back, she is the team’s career leading scorer.

Blum told the Times that she won the soccer case but learned some painful lessons. A friend shunned her, classmates questioned her sexuality and her family’s car was vandalized.

"That was my first real lesson as to what my place was supposed to be,” she said.
