The law firm Fenwick & West had held off on lawyer layoffs, until now.

The law firm announced 22 layoffs yesterday, and 15 associates are among those being let go, the Recorder reports. The other people laid off were staffers.

Fenwick chairman Gordon Davidson told the publication he had hoped to avoid lawyer layoffs, but the economic downturn made it impossible to hold off any longer. "The downturn in the economy has been longer and deeper than we hoped," Davidson said. "We were operating with excess capacity, and we thought it would bounce back sooner."

The layoffs are being made in San Francisco and Mountain View, Calif., the story says. The law firm’s corporate department was most affected by the layoffs.

The law firm laid off 36 staffers in January.

Above the Law broke the news yesterday of the latest Fenwick layoffs.
