Fire Illegal Workers, Or Else

Employers will need to start paying attention when they receive a so-called no-match letter informing them that a worker’s Social Security number doesn’t match his name.

Under rules expected to be issued this week, employers will have to clear up any clerical error or fire the worker within a fixed time frame, perhaps 90 days, the New York Times reports. Those who fail to comply could be fined up to $10,000 for hiring an illegal immigrant.

Immigrant groups and labor unions fear the rules will lead to discrimination against Hispanics. They are preparing a legal challenge in an effort to block the regulations from taking effect.
