Flip Flops in the Office? Hiring Partner’s Blog Has an Opinion

Should lawyers wear flip flops at work? Should summer associates decorate their offices?
No, and no, answers a new anonymous blogger who claims to be the hiring partner of an AmLaw 200 firm. The blog is called Hiring Partner’s Office.
“Sorry, folks, but for law firm salaries, you can put on real shoes instead of flip flops,” sniffs the blogger. “It's Nordstrom anniversary sale time--go pick up a pair! If you don't like conforming, then you might want to think about some other gig.”
The advice on office decorating is on a list of Top Ten Things Law Students Do that Annoy Your Hiring Partner During the Summer. One of them is personalizing your summer associate office with pictures and diplomas.
Other annoyances include “leaving summer associate events super early,” asking your secretary to make medical appointments for you, and taking off your flip flops (if you make the mistake of wearing them).
The Wall Street Journal Law Blog writes that it’s unknown if the new blogger is really a hiring partner. The last so-called anonymous hiring partner was in reality Harvard law grad Jeremy Blachman, who based his material on a summer associate position at Willkie Farr & Gallagher.
