Foie Gras Is Once Again Legal in Chicago

The Chicago City Council has repealed a controversial ban on the sale of foie gras in the city, heeding the mayor’s plea to put the item back on the menu.
Mayor Richard Daley had previously called the ban "the silliest law the city council has ever passed,” the Chicago Tribune reports. Restaurant owners had opposed the law, but it was supported by animal rights activists who say the delicacy is produced by force-feeding ducks and geese until their livers swell to 10 times their normal size.
The first restaurant owner fined for violating the ban was Doug Sohn of Hot Doug's. "The one thing I'm hoping is that this issue finally gets put to bed and the city can spend its time on real issues," he said.
