A lawyer in South Florida pleaded no contest today to stealing almost $300,000 in client settlement funds.

Patrick Joseph Dooley, 45, is expected to get between five and 20 years in prison when he is sentenced in September, reports the Miami Herald.

''It's a tragedy,'' says Broward Assistant State Attorney David Schulson. "The guy got himself into a hole financially, and instead of dealing with it through bankruptcy or other means, he stole from his clients.''

Admitted in Florida in 1991, Dooley was disbarred in February, the newspaper recounts.
