Louisville, Ky-based Frost Brown and Indianapolis firm Locke Reynolds have announced they will merge, creating a 450-lawyer firm with offices in five states.

The merger is to be effective Jan. 5, according to reports in the Indianapolis Business Journal and Louisville Journal-Courier. Locke Reynolds, which has 79 lawyers, will lose its name.

Locke Reynolds partner Jim Dimos told the Business Journal that his firm instigated the merger and identified 10 regional firms that would be suitable. Frost Brown was at the top of the list.

Dick Erickson, Frost Brown's co-managing partner in Cincinnati, told the Columbus Business First that the firm had been looking to move into Indiana for a while. The strategic goal is reportedly for the firm to grow without moving into large markets such as Chicago or Atlanta.
