A North Carolina judge has declined to reduce the $500,000 bail for a 76-year-old Georgia woman accused of hiring a hit man to kill her fourth husband.

Meanwhile, as Betty Neumar sits in a North Carolina jail awaiting trial, authorities are reinvestigating the deaths of three more of her five husbands, and her firstborn child, according to the Associated Press. As discussed in an earlier ABAJournal.com post, the brother of her alleged victim, Harold Gentry, urged authorities for more than 20 years to pursue the case.

"She told me that people of our stature have insurance policies on each other," says a grandson, Jeff Carstensen, concerning Neumar's alleged plan to buy him a $100,000 life insurance policy and name herself as beneficiary. "That way, if something happens to you, you take care of me, and if something happens to me, I take care of you. It was all too suspicious. So I got out of there any way I could, as soon as I could."
