After 12 years of study, a retired veterinarian in Thailand has earned his law degree, at age 88.

A special graduation ceremony was held for Sa-nguan Sunthornwong, who is affectionately known as "Grandfather" to his classmates, reports the Bangkok Post. He had hoped to attend the regular ceremony on Jan. 23 at Thammathirat Open University, but couldn't because he was recovering from emergency surgery.

However, news that he had done well on his final exam put Sunthornwong on the road to recovery, according to a son.

The octogenarian apparently doesn't plan to practice—but does intend, if time permits, to study for another degree.

"Studying law is easy if you have good attention, and none of the subjects were difficult for me," he tells the newspaper. "Although I used to do up to 12 mock tests per subject, I never became discouraged."
