Harvard Law School Axes 12 Staff

In another sign of the dismal U.S. economy and a possible harbinger of program cuts yet to come, Harvard University is laying off 275 employees as it faces a projected 30 percent drop in the value of its endowment.
Among those being let go are 12 employees of Harvard Law School, reports the Boston Globe.
While the scope of these layoffs is unprecedented during the time that most or all of those affected have been working at the university, according to the newspaper, those being let go represent only a very small fraction of Harvard's total work force, notes Harvard Magazine. As of October, the university had 12,950 full-time nonfaculty staff members.
In an e-mail sent yesterday, Howell Jackson, the law school dean, said he avoided even deeper cuts because “members of the faculty and senior administration staff have pledged to contribute several hundred thousand dollars in cash.’’
It appears that the law school layoffs affect staff members only and will not include any faculty.
