Heller Ehrman Sends Chairman to New York, in Something of a Trend

The last big San Francisco law firm to have its chairman full-time in the city has decided to send its leader packing to New York.
Matthew Larrabee, chairman of Heller Ehrman, will move to the firm’s New York office this month, the Recorder reports. Larrabee told the publication the change is a strategic plus. "We've been focused on building out a truly national platform,” he said. “That means growth in New York and D.C. for us right now."
He told the Recorder the firm plans to expand the New York office and it will one day be the same size as, or larger than, the San Francisco office. In a different interview with The Lawyer, he acknowledged the possibility of a future merger.
No other Am Law 100 law firm has both its largest office and its chairman full-time in San Francisco, the Recorder says.
The chairman of Morrison & Foerster moved to New York two years ago. The leaders of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe and Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner divide their time between offices in San Francisco and New York. The chairman of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman is in Los Angeles.
