House Fails to Override Bush Veto of War Bill

An attempt today by the U.S. House of Representatives to override President George W. Bush's veto yesterday of a controversial Iraq war funding bill failed by a significant margin. A two-thirds majority was required to override the veto, but the vote was 222-203.

The White House and Congress are now in negotiations to try to develop a new bill, reports Reuters.

Said the president: "Yesterday was the day that highlighted differences. Today's the day where we can work together to find common ground."

The previous bill was controversial, although it provided more than $100 billion to fund the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, because it tied the appropriation to a schedule that would mandate starting a pullout of American combat troops this year.
