National law firm Howrey may be close to a deal to acquire high-end IP boutique Day Casebeer Madrid & Batchelder, the Recorder reports.

Howrey already has a strong presence in Northern California and could use the acquisition of the Cupertino, Calif.-based firm to beef up its IP practice.

The Recorder notes a strong 11-year run for Day Casebeer as a small firm with marquee clients, who've included Sun Microsystems and Amgen.

However, the firm has been dogged lately by a discovery scandal in a patent fight between Qualcomm Inc. and Broadband Corp. In that case, five Day Casebeer lawyers were sanctioned in 2008. Four of those lawyers have left the firm.
