If You Could Rename Your Law School, What Name Would You Choose?

With news this week that the powers in Berkeley are suffering an identity crisis and may bolt from their law school’s name Boalt Hall, we had this question:

If you—because you won the lottery, got that big firm partnership, won the verdict of a lifetime—had naming rights to your law school, what name would you choose?

    We’d get rid of the initials and the confusion with New York Law School.  We’d rename NYU “Manhattan Law School” (if the name wasn’t already taken!).

    I would get rid of the Hyphen and change Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis to Indianapolis School of Law.

    I’d change Wake Forest University School of Law to Wake Forest Law School.  Smaller and easier to fit into boxes on government applications.

    I’d second Dianne Pringer’s comment above.  New York Law School stays as is--and NYU gets the Manhattan bid.  Much easier, less confusion, less feeling you have explain every time.

    I’d change the name of my beloved alma mater from Hamline University School of Law (HUSL), St. Paul, Minnesota, to Hamline Law School.  HUSL sounds too much like “hustle.” The reasons are obvious.

    Change the name of my alma matter (now) Pierce Law School, back to what it was - Frankline Pierce Law Center, or a new name - Franklin Pierce Law School or simply Frank’s Law School

    The University of California, Hastings College of the Law graduating class of 2006 referred to Hastings as “Half the School, Twice the Price” in light of construction shutting down half the campus, and Governor Schwarzenegger doubling our tuition over three years.

    I’d change Georgetown University Law Center to Georgetown University Law School. I always hated the “Center” in its name.

    I would change Chase College of Law to Chase Law School. Chase is the best!

    I would change the name of the University of Baltimore School of Law to Maryland State Law School.  I think this name would help destroy the image that U of B is a small town law school when it is in fact quite large. Ask any Maryland lawyer and they will tell you that U of B grads are the driving force behind the Maryland bar.  Most of the Maryland judges are U of B grads.

    Change the name of Oregon’s finest - Willamette University College of Law to Willamette Law School - it rhymes with dammit by the way, you plebian stooges.

    Granted “WUCL” makes a fine acronym - but that full name is a resume filler!

    Frank’s Law School it a terrible name.  No one calls Franklin Pierce Law Center “Frank’s” anymore.  When people ask you where you graduated from; do you want to say “Frank’s” - no you say “Pierce Law” - it has the same parallel structure as “Harvard Law”, etc.  Lay people better recognize such a name.  Much better for marketing.

    I’d change Temple University - Beasley School of Law to Temple University Law School.  It was ridiculous when they added all of those extra words in 1999.  Simple is better.

    My undergrade was at SUU. I always thought they need a law school becuase who wouldn’t want to graduated from SUe U Law School.

    $160k First Year Salary Law School.  However, we’d have to change the name every few months as associate salaries rise.

    We are under construction at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law, and our student center is this old restaurant called Corleone’s, so me and my classmates lovingly refer to our school simply as “Corleone’s School of Law” “A lawyer with his briefcase can steal more than a 100 men with guns"--
    The Godfather.

    I was a night student at the Washington College of Law of the American University which meant going summers with no A/C, so
    NOAC School of Law

    While I don’t know anything about lack of A/C (in fact I’d suggest there was too much A/C), I’d change the American University, Washington College of Law to American University Law School so the affiliation is clear without having to fill up two lines of text.

    I would change the American University Washington College of Law to American University Law School.

    As for the other comment, the A/C worked a bit too well during my time there!  Sorry you had a different experience!  Such a great school, though.

    In recognition of the University of Arkansas’ mascot, the Razorback Hog, I would change the University of Arkansas School of Law to the Hog School of Law.

    I would change it back to its original, and true, name as it was when I graduated:  Temple University School of Law.  It is bad enough sports venues now sell out - oops, sell “naming rights” - to corporate lords.  Must academic institutions now sell (out) to uber-rich graduate/donors?

    Seriously, why should all other schools try to increase diversity when there are thousands of students actively working AGAINST that effort by self-segregating?

    Howard is not self-segregation.  white people can and do go there.  Kind of like the big firms.  All white males but blacks, asians and women are welcome (sometimes).

    I am a 1L at “The Catholic Unitersity of America, Columbus School of Law.” I guess we could break this down to TCUA, CSL.  The acronym is even too long people!  Come on!  I like Catholic Universtity School of Law, that’s still pretty long though…

    Diane Pringer is right on.  My friends are all confused when I tell them I go to New York Law School and they congratulate me for getting into NYU.  We wish we instead were called Manhattan Law School.

    My alma mater’s name is fine, as Marquette University Law School, I just wish they would change the mascot name back to the Warriors.
