A federal judge has blocked a law that would require landlords in one Texas town to verify that tenants are U.S. citizens or legal immigrants.

U.S. District Judge Sam Lindsay of Dallas granted a preliminary injunction barring the law from taking effect, the Houston Chronicle reports.

Lindsay wrote that the law, approved by voters in Farmers Branch last month, is vague and "based upon a scheme that does not adopt federal immigration standards."

Marisol Perez, a staff attorney with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, said the action is in accord with other court decisions that do not permit such laws to take effect.
