In an About Face, New Jersey Provides Lawyer Records to Website

The state of New Jersey has complied with a request for records of thousands of lawyers in the state by lawyer-ranking website Avvo.

Avvo had petitioned the New Jersey Supreme Court for access to names, year of admission and current bar status of the state’s lawyers after the clerk of the court refused to turn over the information.

The clerk, Stephen Townsend, had originally said lawyer records weren’t subject to the state’s open records laws. But in a March 27 letter Townsend reversed himself and said he would provide the information, the Associated Press reports.

Avvo says it now lists lawyers from 11 states and the District of Columbia.
