India to Open Door to Foreign Law Firms?

The government of India and attorneys throughout the country reportedly are considering a proposal to make it easier for foreign law firms to establish a presence there.
Under possible legislation being discussed by bar groups throughout India, foreign law firms could establish a limited liability partnership in the country so long as one partner is a resident of India, according to Udayavani, a Karnataka daily publication.
Opening up the country to foreign law firms has been opposed in the past by Indian attorneys. However, there is now apparently a sense that doing so could help the nation become a bigger player in an international trend toward outsourcing legal work from other countries to India.
