An appeals court judge has ordered former New York judge Gerald Garson to begin serving his prison term immediately.

Associate Justice Edward Carni revoked a stay that had been issued pending appeal, the New York Times reports.

Garson was convicted of accepting bribes to extend favors to lawyers in matrimonial cases. He was sentenced earlier this month to up to 10 years in prison.

Papers filed with the appellate court had said Garson needed to be hospitalized for alcohol detoxification before he begins to serve his sentence, the New York Post reports.
