Judge Takes Crack at Seuss-Style Egg Rhyme

With a nod to Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham, a federal judge has warned an inmate that attaching a hard-boiled egg to his complaint about his prison diet was a half-baked idea.

Magistrate Judge James Muirhead of Concord, N.H., ordered the egg destroyed forthwith, the Concord Monitor reports. "Today! Today!" the judge wrote. "Today I say! Without delay!"

The Wall Street Journal Law Blog posted more of Muirhead's rhyme, which read in part:

“I do not like eggs in the file. I do not like them in any style. I will not take them fried or boiled. I will not take them poached or broiled. I will not take them soft or scrambled, despite an argument well-rambled.”

Love it! Great laughter break from an otherwise law intense day.

Funny, but I feel sorry for the prisoner who probably doesn’t consider his complaint a joke, and probably didn’t appreciate the magistrate judge treating it as one.

    Rose -

It’s prison, not a Holiday Inn.  The guy was whining about the food not being good.  I reiterate, it’s prison - what did he expect?

    Bill-

The prisoner was not “whining about the food not being good,“ the prisoner was complaining that his religious dietary obligations were being violated.  The inmate is apparently Jewish and was/is upset that he was/is being denied kosher meals.

If he were anything other than Jewish, his dietary requirements probably would have been accommodated.

On a personal note, this is quite reminiscent of how my religious obligations were continually ignored during law school.  I was always told to “get over it” when exams, student events, study sessions, and other events, were continuously scheduled during holidays or on my sabbath.

I just love the “more tolerant” segment of our society that runs (and graduates from) the law schools of this country.

In case you are wondering, sexual assault of minors IS against Jewish law.  However, Judaism is not an “all-or-nothing.“  While this man is paying his debt to society, he should not be denied kosher meals, in my opinion.

    Just “food” for thought.
