Jury Selection Begins in Katrina Case

By Debra Cassens Weiss

Jury selection is expected to begin today in the second Hurricane Katrina case to be tried in Louisiana federal court.

Robert and Merryl Weiss are suing Allstate Insurance Co., claiming the insurer covered only partial losses, the Associated Press reports.

The Weisses maintain an engineer hired by Allstate altered reports on storm-damaged homes so claims could be denied under policies that limit recoveries for flooding, but not for wind damage. In their case, the engineer blamed their losses on storm surge.

Allstate says the Weisses misrepresented their claim for a boathouse that wasn’t on their insured property.
