Jury Deadlocks in Trial of Man Accused of Killing Ex-Bar President

A jury has deadlocked in the trial of homeless man accused of killing a former president of the California State Bar during a sexual tryst two years ago.
The defendant, Michael Salvador Anunciation, was accused of killing Garvin Shallenberger, who was state bar president in 1977-78, the Daily Journal reports. Anunciation claimed through his lawyers that he attacked Shallenberger because the 85-year-old retired lawyer hurt him during the encounter. He also maintained that Shallenberger was still alive when he left him. Prosecutors disputed that scenario.
Jurors deadlocked 8-4 in favor of conviction on a second-degree murder charge, the story said. Shallenberger was a former partner at Rutan & Tucker in Costa Mesa and had overseen the firm's litigation department.
