Kennedy Pushes OT Law After Ruling

Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., says he will work to amend a federal labor law to protect the wages of home-health aides.
Kennedy said a U.S. Supreme Court ruling barring overtime for most home-care workers highlights “a significant gap in the protections of our laws.”
The opinion issued yesterday said a Labor Department regulation exempted workers employed by home-care agencies from federal overtime and minimum wage protections.
Lawyers for health-aide Evelyn Coke had argued the regulation clashed with 1974 legislation broadening minimum wage coverage, according to the New York Times. The Supreme Court disagreed, saying Congress’ intent was unclear.
