Laid Off By Thelen, Associate Happily Moves In-House

Being included among the 26 associates laid off firmwide by Thelen this past spring proved to be a blessing in disguise for attorney Anthony Kornacki.
Tired of working every day with the number 8.66—his average daily billable hours quota to meet the firm's 2,100-hour threshold—mentally emblazoned on his brain, the 33-year-old Hartford lawyer wound up moving to an in-house counsel position with XL Insurance there, reports the Connecticut Law Tribune.
He is delighted with the decision, which no longer requires him to put in a couple more hours of billable time after dinner in order to join his family for the meal, the legal publication writes. However, because of the difficult economy, finding such a position in a corporate law department may not be easy for those who might like to follow Kornacki's example.
“I love the practice of law, but I just didn’t enjoy the business of it," Kornacki says. "I think many others are in the same boat.”
