Spending on business development among law firms surveyed by ALM Research went up by more than 20 percent last year.

Meanwhile, the survey says, these law firms spent 1.2 percent of their gross revenue on business development and marketing, reports the Associated Press.

"Hiring last year for business development was focused on leadership positions, while new marketing hires tended to focus on support staff," the news agency writes. Few of those hired in these areas had law degrees, it notes.
