Law Prof to Head White House Military Office

This week President-elect Barack Obama announced that University of New Mexico Law Professor Louis E. Caldera will head the White House Military Office.

In the role, Caldera, a former Clinton secretary of the Army, will oversee all White House military operations, including Air Force One, Camp David and presidential trips overseas, a Washington Post blog reports.

Caldera, who graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served as an Army officer, earned law and business degrees from Harvard University. He later practiced law in California.

Caldera has worked in higher education since 2001, first as a vice chancellor for the California State University system. Then from 2003 to 2006, he was UNM's president. He was a tenured prof after that, according to his UNM bio.

He's been on leave from the university since early November when he joined the Department of Defense Agency Review Team, which is part of Obama’s White House transition operation, according to a UNM release.
