North Carolina Central University law student Matt Reeder is revealing how he prepared for a moot court competition judged by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr.

The secret: "Prayer, prayer and more prayer," Reeder told News14Carolina.com.

Reeder told News14 that Roberts “really gave us a long leash, let us make our arguments" and “his presence on the bench was very calming."

Media outlets were not allowed to attend the arguments. Reeder won a top oralist award along with Khalida Lloyd.

NCCU has hosted just one other Supreme Court justice—Potter Stewart in 1980, according to the News & Observer.
