Lawyer Loses Claim for Mormon Tax Exemption

A federal appeals court has rebuffed a Las Vegas lawyer who said he should not have to pay Social Security taxes because of his Mormon religion.
Jonathan Hansen told the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.) he views the tax as “satanic.”
“I belong to a religion that will take care of me,” he said. “I don't need the Social Security system and I don't want it.”
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals based in San Francisco said Hansen’s suit failed to specify what particular statutes and regulations he was challenging. Instead he sought a general declaration that he and his son do not have to use a Social Security number, the court said.
