Lawyer is Among Would-Be Olympics Protesters Detained by China

Six would-be protesters in China were detained after they indicated plans to demonstrate in areas set aside for that purpose near the Olympics.
One of them is Zhang Wei, who filled out a form for a protest permit to raise objections to the planned demolition of her home, the New York Times reports. She was arrested and sentenced to six months in prison for disturbing the social order, her family told the newspaper.
Two human rights activists have also been detained, the story says. One of them is lawyer Ji Sizun, according to Human Rights Watch. He was arrested as he sought to check on detained activist Tang Xuecheng. Before his arrest, Ji had completed an application to protest corruption and lack of democracy.
So far no one has demonstrated in the designated protest zones, according to the story.
