Lawyer Jokes No Laughing Matter for This Partner/Comedian

By night and on weekends, one might find Nuzzo & Roberts senior partner Rick Roberts doing stand-up comedy at a fundraiser or charity event.

But you won't hear Roberts cracking jokes about lawyers. That's because he keeps his day job—doing insurance defense, product liability, employment litigation and commercial litigation at his Cheshire, Conn.-based firm—close to his chest.

"Telling them I'm a lawyer is not the best way to win over the audience and create a warm and fuzzy feeling," Roberts is quoted saying in a short feature by the Connecticut Law Tribune.

Roberts doesn't mix his two worlds—lawyer and comedian—and instead draws from everyday life to build his comedy routine.

In one example, which can be seen in a video clip on his website, Roberts says:

"Stupid announcements are everywhere, not just airports. I called my credit card company the other day, and there's actually a recording that says, 'You must enter your account number exactly as it appears on the card.' Thanks for the tip. I was going to plug the numbers in randomly."
