Chicago law firm Neal, Gerber & Eisenberg has laid off 19 lawyers and 32 administrative staffers.

Partners as well as associates were hit by the layoffs, managing partner Jerry Biederman told the Chicago Tribune. He did not say how many partners were ousted. The cuts represent about 10 percent of the firm’s 200 lawyers.

The story also notes an unusual attempt to cut costs by another Chicago firm, Much Shelist Denenberg Ament & Rubenstein. It has cut pay by 10 percent for both partners and associates through May 31.

“The decisions to cut costs at the two firms shed light on how tough the recession has been on the majority of their clients, midsize companies in Chicago with $5 million to $500 million in revenue,” the Tribune writes.
