Long & Winding Road to UK Law Partnership is Getting Longer

For the third year in a row, it's taking a little longer to make partner at major United Kingdom law firms.
The average wait for the gold ring for those who succeed in grabbing it is now 8.8 years, compared to 8.2 years in 2006, reports Legal Week. In the past five years, associates at some firms have been making partner after an average seven years; at the upper end, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer last year posted a 12-year average for making partner.
Says David Cheyne, a senior partner at Linklaters: "We do have an official minimum of six years before an individual can be made up to partner. However there is no maximum.”
