Many Heller Associates Have Trouble Landing New Jobs

Associates at the dissolving law firm Heller Ehrman are facing a tougher time landing new jobs than partners.

About a fourth of Heller’s associates have announced they are moving to new firms, but others in hard-hit practice areas are finding the job market is difficult, the National Law Journal reports. Most of the associates who have been hired by new law firms are in specialty areas such as intellectual property that are not as affected by the economic downturn.

Thirty patent litigation associates jumped to Covington & Burling, while 18 associates from Heller’s Venture Law Group leaped to Cooley Godward Kronish, the story says. The group focuses on corporate and intellectual property work.

Legal recruiter Alan Miles told the legal newspaper that associates are likely having a hard time if they are in corporate and commercial litigation, antitrust and securities law.
