Md. 3L Produces Net Hit: ‘Law School Musical’ (Video)

Now a third-year law student at the University of Maryland, Owen Jarvis faced a "drastic" shift in expectations when he first entered law school.

But instead of dropping out, Jarvis channeled his frustrations into his computer, writing a song and producing an illustrated YouTube video titled "Law School Musical," the Associated Press reports in a news feature about Jarvis.

He wrote the song, "1L Life Is Hell," while taking finals, then illustrated and posted the video about lack of money, sleep and feelings of inadequacy in September. YouTube registers more than 148,000 users who have viewed the video.

"I'm the closest thing to a rock star at University of Maryland law school," Jarvis is quoted as saying.

At least one adjunct uses the video in her classes. Julia Belian, an adjunct law professor at University of Missouri-Kansas City, told Jarvis she used the "amazing" video in two classes.

"I remember how that felt—I remember it very clearly," Julian Belian, who teaches at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, told the Baltimore Daily Record (sub. req.). Belian said she "wanted them to know they're not alone, that this is a pretty much universal experience for 1Ls."
