Meet the ‘Mad Czech’ Stephen Hrones, Lawyer for Accused Kidnapper

A flamboyant Boston criminal defense lawyer says someone needs to stand up for accused kidnapper Clark Rockefeller, and he is stepping up to the job.

"The press is crucifying him," the 66-year-old Hrones told the Boston Globe. "He has no one to stand up for him at all. He has no friends now. No one wants to get involved. Someone has to stand up for him."

Hrones jokingly calls himself “Mr. Innocence” because of his success in getting the convictions overturned of four prisoners convicted of rape or murder because of newly discovered evidence. “Others call him ‘the Mad Czech,’ ” the newspaper reports, “for his sometimes abrasive, confrontational style and blustery demeanor.”

Rockefeller is accused of kidnapping his 7-year-old daughter after a divorce from a wealthy socialite. He also has been described as a person of interest in the 1985 disappearance of a California couple.

Hrones calls the kidnapping case the climax of his career, the Boston Globe story says. He has defended his client in appearances on network and cable news shows and in frequent news conferences outside the county jail where his client is being held.
