Men Cook Up a Victory in Nixon Peabody Food Contest

The men emerged victorious in Nixon Peabody's annual cook-off yesterday, aided by a strong showing by securities partner John Partigan, who had first-place wins in the salads and vegetables categories and the second-place position in soups and stews.

The men compete against the women in the annual cook-off, an event that promotes camaraderie and is even more popular than the Washington, D.C., law firm's summer bocce tournaments, the Washington Post reports.

Partigan’s winning dishes were Fresh Blackberries Asian Salad, Cauliflower and Caramelized Onion Tart, and Shrimp and Scallop Posole. Office services clerk Penny Young took the best-in-show prize with her SpongeBob SquarePants cake.

Among the judges were chefs from the Four Seasons Hotel and the Caucus room and other food employees at the Four Seasons and the Mandarin Oriental.

"I'd hire the cooks from today in a heartbeat," said judge Michael Deltette, who is director of catering at the Mandarin Oriental.

But executive chef Douglas Anderson of the Four Seasons was more restrained in his praise. "Food can look better than it tastes, sometimes, you know?" he said.
