Nearly a quarter of the top 50 law firms in the United Kingdom say layoffs are possible or likely in the current financial year.

Ten percent of the firms responding to a survey by Legal Week said job cuts were likely or very likely. Another 12 percent said job cuts were possible.

None of the firms was willing to rule out layoffs entirely, although 32 percent said the prospect was unlikely or very unlikely, Legal Week’s story on the survey says.

The news comes as another British law firm, Hammonds, announced it will be cutting jobs. Other firms that have eliminated positions in their British offices include Clifford Chance, DLA Piper, Eversheds and Simmons & Simmons. Real estate practice groups have been the hardest hit.
