New U.S. Attorneys Picked Before Eight Fired

A Justice Department e-mail released today contradicts the department's earlier insistence that it fired eight U.S. attorneys for performance reasons, not political ones. It shows that Kyle Sampson, former chief of staff to embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, had potential replacements selected nearly a year before the federal prosecutors were given their walking papers, the New York Times reports.
