Updated: The new robes in which U.K. judges will preside in court as of Oct. 1 are still primarily black. However, they are now not only designed by Betty Jackson but feature two vertical stripes down the upper front which reflect the judges' position.

"For the division heads and Court of Appeal judges, the flash of color will be gold, while red is the shade of choice for the High Court judiciary," reports the Lawyer.

Additional coverage:

Agence France-Presse: "Beam me up, M'Lud: judges get 'Star Trek' outfits"

London Times: "Lord Chief Justice and his funky new gown"

The Telegraph: "Lord Chief Justice models new gown for judges"

Updated at 12:20 p.m., May 13, 2008, to include additional coverage.
