New Jersey’s controversial U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie is resigning.

The New Jersey Star-Ledger carried news of the resignation and said Christie is the leading contender for the Republican nomination for governor. He made a name for himself prosecuting public corruption, but he raised some eyebrows for awarding a no-bid contract for corporate monitoring work to former Attorney General John Ashcroft.

Critics also say Christie resents criticism and appears to retaliate against those who challenge him, according to a story published in the New York Times earlier this year.
