Bringing the law firm layoffs total since Feb. 27 close to the 2,700 mark, a regional business firm based in Connecticut has just announced that it is cutting five attorneys and seven staff members.

In a written statement, the 61-attorney firm says the move "is the direct result of the current economic downturn that is affecting businesses and employers across the nation,” reports the Connecticut Law Tribune.

This is the fourth announcement of layoffs today by a well-known law firm. In January, Pepe & Hazard laid off two attorneys and two staff members, and the firm announced a pay freeze in December, the legal publication notes.

In November, the firm announced that it would not be increasing billable hourly rates for clients this year.
