N.Y. Gov. Wants Expansive DNA Collection

Those who are convicted of any misdemeanor in New York would have to submit DNA for a criminal database, under a plan by the state’s governor.
Few states have such an expansive DNA collection law, according to the New York Times. It would apply to misdemeanors such as harassment and unauthorized use of a credit card, but not to offenses that are considered mere violations, such as disorderly conduct.
Currently the state collects DNA from those convicted of more serious crimes. Gov. Eliot Spitzer plans to introduce the bill this week.
