Offit Snags 9-Lawyer Philadelphia Firm; BigLaw Mergers Help Us, MP Says

In two years, the Philadelphia office of Offit Kurman has grown from four lawyers to 20, with the law firm's planned acquisition Oct. 1 of Abrahams, Loewenstein & Bushman and its nine attorneys.

One major reason why it is growing, says Theodore Offit, managing principal of the 41-lawyer Maryland-based firm, is the growth of bigger competitors. As major firms grow and develop a national or international focus, midsize firms like his can woo clients and attorneys left behind, he tells the Legal Intelligencer, in an article reprinted by New York Lawyer (reg. req.).

"We targeted Philadelphia because there's a lot of affiliation and consolidation" among big firms, he tells the Intelligencer. "That's what brought us to Philly."

Among the lawyers Offit is gaining via the merger with the Abrahams firm is Sayde Ladov, who is Chancellor elect of the Philadelphia Bar Association, notes a press release.
