Pakistanis Protest Judge’s Ouster

Protesters in Pakistan gathered today outside a hearing for an ousted Supreme Court justice, burning an effigy of President Gen. Pervez Musharraf and chanting, “Stop attacking the judiciary.”

Musharraf claimed he removed Ifitkhar Mohammed Chaudhry because he allegedly abused his position. Critics contend the president is trying to undermine the judiciary.

The Associated Press reports that thousands of lawyers and other activists are rallying across the country, but the biggest demonstration is outside the Supreme Court building in Islamabad, where the hearing was held.
