Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman has created a new position that so far has been mostly confined to European law firms: Director of corporate social responsibility.

The lawyer appointed to the position is Tania Shah, the former executive director of the California Minority Counsel Program, the Recorder reports.

The new position “will unite several programs—diversity and inclusion, sustainability, health and safety, pro bono, charitable giving and community outreach and involvement—under one umbrella,” according to a press release by the law firm. Shaw will work with partners who oversee each of the areas to provide direction and support.

The new program may help satisfy client demands for social responsibility, said Chuck Fanning of lawyer search firm Major, Lindsey & Africa. "If [clients] are proud of their law firm, they're more likely to stick around," he told the Recorder.
