The public is divided on whether U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales should be forced out because of his handling of the firings of eight U.S. Attorneys, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Forty-five percent of those surveyed said Gonzales should lose his job, and 39 percent said he should not, the Washington Post reports.

The survey also finds that 67 percent of Americans believe the prosecutors were fired for political reasons.

Meanwhile, Time magazine reports that a group of influential conservatives has written a letter to the White House calling for Gonzales' resignation. One lawyer who signed the letter, former Reagan Justice Department official Bruce Fein, told Time that planned testimony released by Gonzales is a "terrible disappointment" that leaves key questions unanswered.
