New Yorkers and other Northeasterners struggling in the aftermath of Monday's major storm have until April 26 to file their federal tax returns, an Internal Revenue Service commissioner announced today.
The extension, which adds another week to the original two-day delay offered to those affected by the storm, came at the request of Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., reports the Associated Press.
To claim the filing deadline extension, residents of affected areas should write "April 16 storm" on their returns, and the claim will be interpreted liberally, according to Schumer. '"They're not going to make you prove that you were affected by the storm," he says.
