Texas PI Lawyer Baron Has Cancer, Fights for Experimental Drug

Fred Baron has terminal cancer, and is fighting, so far without success, to be treated with an experimental drug.

The 61-year-old has been diagnosed with “final stage multiple myeloma,” his son, Andrew, writes on a personal blog, and may have only a short time to live, reports the Dallas Morning News.

He is seeking to be treated with the drug Tysabri, which requires permission of the manufacturer, Biogen, for the off-label use. So far, permission has been refused, because Biogen is concerned that a bad outcome could restrict the drug's use on other patients, the newspaper explains.

A prominent Texas personal injury lawyer who made headlines this year because of his role in trying to help Democratic politician John Edwards avoid a sex scandal, Baron founded a Dallas law firm, Baron & Budd, and has been a major Democratic party fundraiser.

I hope Biogen changes their mind.

I hope he gets what he deserves - nothing more, nothing less.

“So far, permission has been refused, because Biogen is concerned that a bad outcome could restrict the drug’s use on other patients”.  That’s charitable - how ‘bout Biogen is concerned that Fred’s fellow TAs will sue them if the drug ever causes harm anywhere or anyhow in the future.
