Rainmaking Lawyer is Named New Chairman at Paul Weiss

Litigator Brad Karp will take over as chairman of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison next year.
The 48-year-old Karp, co-chair of the firm's litigation department, is considered the firm’s top rainmaker, according to the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.) and the newspaper’s Law Blog. He will take the place of 70-year-old Alfred Youngwood.
Karp told Law Blog his goal is to preserve the firm’s culture, which emphasizes collaboration and seeks to allay disputes over business generation credit. He also hopes to continue to practice law while he leads the firm.
Karp began his career at the firm as a summer associate in 1983, the New York Law Journal reports. "This is a firm I was attracted to because it was committed to collegiality, community service and partners working together collaboratively," he said.
He told the Law Journal he will seek to preserve collegiality by taking a cautious approach to lateral recruitment and international expansion.
Youngwood praised Karp as a hard worker and a good golfer who also has “a tremendous commitment” to his family. “He is one of those lawyers who put it all together,” Youngwood told Law Blog.
