A recent law graduate in California is worried that the state’s delay in dispatching tax refunds could do further damage to the economy—and to her job search.

The state is delaying refunds for at least 30 days because of a $15 billion budget shortfall, Reuters reports. Sarah Gilson of San Francisco told the wire service she wasn’t expecting a refund, but she worries that the decision will have a big impact on law firm hiring.

"I don't see how that stimulates the economy," said the recent law grad. She already faces a difficult job market and fears it could worsen. One law firm put a hiring notice on her school’s bulletin board, but pulled it in just a few hours after receiving 400 applications, Gilson said.

"You're not even getting reply e-mails thanking you for your application because so many people are looking for work that firms can't process them," she told Reuters.
