Red-Light Cameras Could Soon Catch Insurance Scofflaws, Too

It wouldn't be difficult for government officials to tweak red-light camera operations so that they also check violators' license plates against automobile insurance records, says an official of a company seeking to sell an insurance-check service to the City of Chicago.
And, eager to increase revenue in tough times, officials in a number of jurisdictions could soon approve the idea, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Although no state or municipality currently uses red-light cameras to check for required auto insurance, it's only a matter of time until such enforcement is commonplace, predicts Rowland Day, executive vice president of Michigan-based InsureNet.
"We're going to have three or four states signed in the next 90 days," Day says.
